i'm about to dump the semagic livejournal client.

the flipping pencil icon in my taskbar wont stop blinking! and i have no new friends entries. if i go to "stop flashing!" it'll stop for like .. 10 minutes. and then start back up again.

anyone know how i can fix this, or recommend a new (better?) client?

The reason it does this, and it's a pain in the ass if you ask me, is anytime someone enters a "private" entry (that only they can see) or maybe a friends flitered entry (where maybe they only have it filtering to a few friends) it'll still flash. It's annoying, but I like the client too much to give it up.

i suppose that's possible, but you would think that the client wouldn't be able to detect what you can't see.

I don't know why, but it does. I have a friend who only posts "Private" and one time it flashed, so I checked his "Calendar" page and it showed that he made an entry so I went to his main LJ page and there wasn't one there so it had to have been a private message. There was nothing else on my friends page at the time.

you can disable it. mine used to do the same. it drove me nuts as well.

yeah, i'm gonna do that. i like that feature if it worked right though, because otherwise i'd forget to check my friends page :)
