Screw Metafilter, or why I'm pissed off this afternoon.

EDIT: The following post is not based on one specific thing that happened to me - it's a ticked-off reaction to things I see being attacked constantly on Metafilter every day. I personally have posted only a few comments on Metafilter, mostly because I haven't felt like being slammed for my beliefs. I should have said this when I first posted this ( Read more... )

There was no particular thread in which I was attacked for all of the above - my post is a build-up of the reactions to the few comments I've made and hundreds that I've read over the past couple of months. I should actually edit this post to reflect that fact - I was angry enough when I wrote it that I didn't really think how it came across.

The thread that set me off once and for all, though is the front page post today about Mother Teresa, in which the opinion is expressed over and over again that people who are religious are "goofy" or "nuts". Just touched the final nerve, you know?

There is a self-righteous tone to a lot of postings. I now skim over them quickly, and just plain avoid anything political. I'm there looking for fun and games, not Chomskyesque rantings.

You are far from the first to abandon them for being an intolerant bunch of clods. Check out

You'll have to scroll down to see his take on Metafilter. He sums it up thusly:
"I salute its founder’s intentions and dedication, but it’s only good for links these days. And that, to answer a few emailers’ questions, is why I don’t post. If I wanted someone to pee on my shoes, I’d hang out at the bus station. "

If you don't regularly read James Lileks, you should. His take on parenting is a lot of fun, as he's a stay-at-home Dad. Beware the cranky right-wingery that pops up now and again. (He always gives you fair warning, though. And it's fun when he starts spitting and hissing.)

And another thing. Metafilter and Fark appear to be sworn Mortal Enemies. Another good reason to read Fark. :-)
