Just a humble opinion here, but I don't think that they invaded for the oil. I think that they invaded for the geography.

The war was against Al Qaeda. They could not attack the organisation directly. One thing that they could attack was their funding, from "enabling states" like Saudi Arabia and Syria. The key thing about Iraq is that it borders on everyone. Comparing the behaviour of the Saudis before and after the invasion makes some interesting reading. They go from a definite lack of cooperation with their US friend to such a harsh policy of cracking down that they are in danger of destabilising their own government. This might just have something to do with all those US troops just over the border, who are now, incidentally, the only assurance they have that Iraq does not turn into a puppet of Iran. Syria is another one to have reversed its policy dramatically. Oil, on the other hand, is not even coming close to paying the bills.
