Books I read in 2008

Okay guys, here's my tally for this year. I totally exceeded even year before last. I have no idea how I did it, as I was busy as hell this year. I guess I read a lot in the bathroom and in bed before I fell asleep, lol. Please feel free to weigh in with your comments or questions about anything I read this year, because I'd love to discuss books ( Read more... )

I've heard good things about the Walking Dead. I've read some of the writer's other stuff, and I've enjoyed the hell out of it.

Zombies have been pretty popular lately, haven't they? Probably because they are in so many video games?

Greg actually made me read The Walking Dead because he is both a comic/graphic novel and zombie fanatic. He kept enthusing about how great the story was and how much I'd love it. I'm not a huge zombie fan, and for me to be willing to read a graphic novel, the story really has to be worth reading, because I have a hard time with the format- the pictures distract me, and I just can't get into the story the way I do with novels. And he was totally right about this series- the characters are compelling, and the storyline is GOOD. The graphics aren't even as bad as you'd expect given the title. I expected a lot more gore and nastiness. It's totally worth reading if you were thinking about it.

2009 definitely looks like it will be the Year Of The Zombie.

FYI, I found this book on Amazon--a "compendium" of Walking Dead containing issues 1-48 for less than $40.

What are your favorite books from the year? I didn't meet my goal of 50, but I'm forgiving myself. This year, though... :)

You know, I knew I forgot something in my recap! :o)

My favorites this year were the entire "sex god" series by Louise Rennison, because although it is aimed at preteen to teenage girls, it's hilarious, poignant and light all at the same time. (I swear it's Bridget Jones for teens!) Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series, because it's a well written bit of straight up fantasy in a world based on the Roman Empire, and Garth Stein's The Art Of Racing In The Rain, which we sold at my store and which is written from the point of view of a golden retriever, reflecting on his life as he nears the end of it (not a spoiler; you can't get through the first chapter without knowing that the dog is not long for this world) This book made me cry, but in a good way.

You had so much going on this year, I can't believe you read as much as you did- I wouldn't have finished a dozen books if I'd been taking on everything you did!
