We took my mother on a picnic. In the hasty scramble to find things she might like, I grabbed a jar of mint jelly. Turns out it's her favourite spreadable condiment ever. She's probably eating it straight off the spoon right now.

Also, if you combine this Oedipus-complex theory with the Hindu concept of reincarnation, then you get people being taken off the mortal coil by images of dogs and tapeworms and such. I am not looking forward to death, but at least I know it'll be mind-blowing.
