You know what? I love the Olympics. Throw the absolute weakest sport into the Olympics (synchronized swimming?), and as long as the event has anything to do with my country, you bet I want to see an athlete draped in the red, white and blue flag standing on the winner's podium. Every time I tell myself I don't care about the Olympics all that much and every time I end up watching them constantly. The pull of completely harmless nationalism is too much for me to avoid, even when it involves synchronized divers or 10-meter air riflemen.

And Michael Phelps is amazing. All the other swimmers and all the other races seem like carbon copies, talent-wise, and then he jumps in the pool and it's like he accidentally entered the wrong age group.
