The ACT is a college entrance examination that basically measures your readiness to enroll in college courses. Most colleges in the U.S. require that you take it- it's one of the things they consider in the admissions process. It's scored out of 36, and a 32 is a VVVVVEEEEEEERRRRRYYYYY good score, especially on the first try. My brother took it twice, and he scored a 22 and a 29.
Wow! YAY for you!! So it is like a sort of general across-the board test?
We don't have that here - at the end of high school we have exams which contribute to our study scores for each subject (the other part is assessments through the year) and then the study scores are combined in some way (it's verrry complicated) to produce an ENTER (Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank) which ranges from 0.05 to 99.95. It's basically how good you are compared to everyone else in the state, and that's mainly what universities use to sort out applications.
Yeah, there are four sections to the test: English, Math, Reading, and Science. You get a score from 1-36 on each of those, and then they average those scores and round to the nearest whole number to get your overall score. The score is based solely on how many right answers you got, but then they also give you a percentile, which is how you did compared to everyone else who took the test.
