this island is called Mauritius, found it on the map just now. it is east of Madagascar by a few hundred miles. I read about it in national geographic, saw pictures and everything, it's oh so gorgeous. there's something like a million people on it, relatively large island too (like some of the smaller Hawaiians). if I remember right they are french and english speaking, one of those jems left over from the colony days. it's pretty big on tourism and also has a decent agricultural economy.

I'm such a nerd... I "escape" with national geographic. lol. (my mom has a nearly full collection dating from the late 20's up until today, probably a good 1000+ editions).

in a national geographic I saw an old man from some very small French Polynesian island, he had "fled from the world" and was living rustically off the land and sea as a hermit. a part of me fantasizes about living like that and being like that old man... pipe, beard, funny hat and all. lol.
