You're in a step-down unit? I've never heard of a PCU unit before.

Are you working with a particular kind of patient, like oncology or geriatric?

step-down units, or progessive care units are one levle below intensive care and critical care units. We take care of any clients who need monitoring of their cardiac functions via telemetry, pulmonary care such as ventialation or tracheostomy with specialized equipment, renal failures who need dialysis, and the medical-surgical overflow. Age is not a factor, we go from 18 to 199.

What's your average staffing ratio in the unit at night?

7am to 7 pm, generally 4 clients to 1 RN, and might go to 6 clients to 1 RN from 7pm to 7 am, but try to maintain the 4 to 1 ratio at all times, especially if they are not med-surg overflow.
