Why did Cuddy have to bring that damned brat to the hospital? Rachel ran around the office, grabbing anything within reach, that shrill voice saying “MOMMY MOMMY MOMMY MOMMY MOMMY!”

How could Cuddy stand it? How could she have expected him to stand it?

House couldn’t help it. Being around small, whining, crying children filled him with rage. The more they cried, the more enraged he felt. He wanted to throw Rachel across the room.

With a forced smile, he excused himself. Clinic duty.

House stepped outside the hospital to take a breath of air and calm himself.

It was a miracle Cuddy hadn’t seen it. But then, House was used to hiding how he felt about children. House remembered all too well crying, looking up at his father, the crack! of his father’s hand across his face.

“Crying is for GIRLS, Greg! Are you a girl?”

“No, sir.”

“Then stop crying before I give you something to cry about!”

The upraised hand which led to the cringing which led to his father stalking away, leaving Greg shaking with terror. But no longer crying.

Now, looking at Rachel when she wailed, his father’s anger rose up in House and he wanted to give her something to cry about. But there was a difference between House and his father.

House knew how to control himself.
