It was only fitting that it was Sanji’s birthday.
The members of the Straw Hat crew partied in the galley of the Thousand Sunny with the exception of Zoro, who’d claimed the occasion wasn’t anything worth celebrating-even though everyone knew the two men would be doing their own celebrating later that night. So it was only fitting that Zoro’s terrible orientation skills and lack of attention allowed the ship to steer off course into new and unusual waters.
It was only fitting that Sanji was going out onto the deck to-rather grudgingly-bring the swordsman a piece of the cake that Nami and Robin had so graciously and beautifully made for the special day. Zoro lifted an eyebrow at him but took the plate, smirking like some smug bastard, so it was only fitting that Sanji kicked him in the head.
The chef was walking back to the galley when a flash of colorful scales caught his eye. He glanced down in appreciation of the exotic fish and would have kept walking, when he saw another fish swim by that was an unmistakably East Blue breed (fittingly enough). Zoro watched Sanji’s body go completely still and almost questioned him when the biggest smile he’d ever seen Sanji sport spread across the blonde’s face.
The splash that followed Sanji jumping into the water below brought the others out onto the deck. Cheers of surprise and excitement went practically unnoticed by Sanji as the water submerged him and bubbles and fins and scales filled his vision. He broke the ocean’s surface for a big gulp of air, and the water on his face might have been tears, but no one would be able to tell so it was all right either way.
It was only fitting that Zoro was the first to join him in the water-Luffy attempted to follow and it took both Usopp and Nami to hold him back. The swordsman told him “happy birthday” like this entire thing was his gift or something, and he had planned it all instead of it being just dumb luck. And it was only fitting that the words and the man beside him only served to make him grin wider, and it was only fitting that he kissed Zoro squarely on the mouth, right in the middle of the All Blue.
