PROLOGUE-
The rain was making the sand wet and sticky beneath Hiro’s feet, and Ayaka laughed at him when he almost tripped, looking back at him over her shoulder as she ran up the path to her family’s beach house. He caught up with her in the doorway and grabbed her around the waist; their beach bag and towels made a wet noise as Ayaka dropped them to the floor, her hands reaching up to tangle in his hair, which was already starting to knot from the rain and sand and wind. He tightened his hold on her when she wrapped her legs around his waist, kissing her with eyes open as he carried her further into the house. She pulled back enough to whisper an urgent “here, here” against his parted lips, and they fell onto the couch, limbs instantly entwining, hindering the process of removing each other’s wet bathing suits. His mouth moved over her neck, salty from the seawater; her back arched and she moaned into his ear as his fingers rubbed firmly between her thighs.
“Hiro,” she all but whimpered, pulling his head back up to kiss him, pressing her body up against him encouragingly, “now, please…”
Any and all coherent thoughts were lost as he pushed inside, enveloped in tight warmth. She gripped at his back and shoulders, entire body flushing with the feeling of being filled. It was ecstasy. It was completion. It was perfect.

Two weeks later...
Ayaka’s bedroom door was locked for the first time in years. She could hear her parents’ voices, faint and indistinct downstairs, as she paced slowly across her floor. The pregnancy test was sitting on top of her dresser, and every so often her eyes would flicker over to it nervously. It would be ready any minute now. Until then, she tried to concentrate on other things, like the rapid hammering of her heart and how many times she heard the name “Uesugi” pop up in her parent’s dialogue compared to the name “Nakano”. They really needed to learn how to let go of some things, she thought. Not that she hadn’t been guilty, in those first few months, of noticing the similarity between a writer’s fingers and a guitarist’s.
Her timer beeped and she brushed off thoughts of fingers. And everything else, for that matter.
She hurried to the dresser, and then wished she hadn’t hurried and almost considered going back to the other side of the room and taking all the time in the world to return to the dresser. But instead, she reached out with a shaky hand and picked up the stick. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them.

Bad Luck was going on stage in twenty minutes. Backstage hands were running about, double-checking the instruments, the lighting, the sound system, with Sakano on their heels with his near-hysterical insistence that everything had to be just right. The three band mates were in hair and make-up, Fujisaki practicing on the air as the make-up artist worked, Shuichi bouncing in his seat as glitter gel was worked into his hair, and Hiro chatting calmly with the woman applying foundation to his face.
His cell phone rang just as she was finished, and when he saw who it was, he answered immediately.
“Hey, Ayaka-chan,” he answered with a big grin that prompted a look from Shuichi that promised teasing later. “How are you? … The noise? Yeah, our concert’s starting in a bit. … No, no, it’s fine! What’s going on? … Of course I remember. I had a great time. … …Yeah? … Wait, what are… … You’re… … Oh.”
Hiro fainted.
The concert started a little late that night.
