Dedication: Happy birthday, Hiro! You awesome, sexy guitarist man, you! (It’s a day late and I’m so sorry!)

Hiroshi Nakano had a hard time relaxing when everything was perfect. Especially on his birthday.

He was sitting in a boat, floating along the easygoing waters of a lazy river, the sun gently warming his skin. Ayaka sat across from him, looking beautiful in a summer sundress she bought just for today, a sweet and appealing smile gracing her face. It was peaceful and romantic, and all Hiro’d asked for on his special day.

But he couldn’t afford to relax. Not on his birthday. Because somehow, someway, Shuichi was always around with some bizarre way to wish him a happy birthday.

“Nakano-san, are you all right? You keep looking around…”

Hiro tore his stare away from a suspicious-looking bunch of bushes on the shore to offer a reassuring smile.

“I’m fine. I’m great. Everything’s great.”

He didn’t know why Shuichi had to be so weird. Everyone else just gave him a card or a call or a practical gift. But Shuichi had do things like slip sleeping pills in Hiro’s drink and put him in a hot air balloon. Or stuff himself in an over-over-sized box of Chinese take-out and have himself delivered to Hiro’s house. Or break in through Hiro’s window and surprise him in the shower.

Hiro really didn’t think his heart could take much more.

And that’s why, this year, he’d gone to Kyoto to spend the day with Ayaka, without saying anything to Shuichi. And so far, the day had been perfect.

But he was still very wary of any strange noises or flashes of pink.

“Nakano-san.”

Hiro had once again been distracted, but snapped out of it when he felt Ayaka reach over and take his hand. His face flushed predictably, and every fiber of his being gave her his full attention.

“I was thinking…maybe you’re acting so strangely because you feel guilty.”

Guilty?

“About what?”

“About not telling Shindou-kun that you were coming here. You’ve spent every birthday with him up until now, right?”

Yes, that was true. While Shuichi’s birthday greetings were always unusual-and sometimes quite frightening-the boy never failed to help Hiro get over them by being his usual charismatic self for the rest of the day, which they spent doing all of their favorite things. Shuichi was, after all, his best friend and he knew just the right way to make his birthdays both memorable and enjoyable.

Hiro couldn’t believe what he’d done.

“If you like,” Ayaka said, with a knowing smile, “we can go back to Tokyo after the boat ride. We could spend the evening with him.”

“Yes,” Hiro said with a relieved sigh. “I would like that very much.”

He felt so much better that he raised her hand to his lips and kissed it. Of course, then they both turned bright red and he instantly dropped her hand like it was on fire. But after sharing a nervous laugh with her, everything was perfect once again.

Feeling very relaxed, Hiro leaned back as much as the boat would allow, smiling contently up at the sky. His pleased expression turned to one of confusion, however, when he saw a blimp flying by with the words “Look down” on it. Puzzled and curious, Hiro looked down in the water of the river and saw…was that a flash of pink? He squinted and moved to lean down and look closer, closer, closer, too close.

“Ah, Nakano-san!” Ayaka called out in surprise when Hiro fell into the water.

Thankfully, the lazy water was no danger, but Hiro doubted he would’ve cared even if it had been otherwise. Shuichi’s arms were around his neck, eyes wide and well-meaning, and Hiro could hear a gurgled and distorted “happy birthday”, despite the water in his ears. And he laughed, even as he choked, because it was a truly perfect day.
