Zak dreams, sometimes, of a forest. He doesn’t understand why, because he’s lived in the city all his life and his apartment is as far from green as it can possibly be. But he still dreams of the forest like he knows it, and wakes up feeling enchanted and wanting.
He turns on the TV, when he has the time, and surfs the channels to find some violent action movie or an obscure and pointless cartoon. He finds himself stopping when he gets to a news program and sees river water turning brown with poison or a saw blade cutting mercilessly into the trunk of a giant tree. He doesn’t know why, but he suddenly feels overcome with sadness and anger. He throws the remote at the screen in frustration and shouts, “Assholes!” followed by what feels like an echo of words he’s heard before, “Can’t you feel its pain?”
When he walks down the street, he looks for women with short, black hair. He’s never really liked that look. He likes blondes and brunettes with long, thick, luscious locks or bouncy, frizzy curls. But he’s drawn to short, black hair, and doesn’t know why, doesn’t know why he always ends up taking them home and looking at them afterwards, as their lying asleep and naked on his bed, and he feels a heavy disappointment. He isn’t sure what he expects from these women, but he does always expect something, something breathtaking and magical. Whatever it is, he never gets it. But he lays his head on the soft skin of their bosom, and when he falls asleep, he dreams of a green paradise that he’s sure he knows, but he barely remembers.
