In retrospect, Saionji thinks he probably should’ve known better.

When he showed up at Touga’s door with two packs of hot chocolate, he’d been so sure the other man would’ve remembered. He hadn’t expected the quizzical arch of the eyebrow and the incredulous greeting, “What brings you here?”

And now he sits and scowls on Touga’s couch, legs crossed and knee bouncing irritably, and he wonders why he even bothered. He closes his eyes, soothed only slightly by the aroma of the chocolate brewing.

He remembers the first night, years ago, when Touga first introduced him to that rich taste. Outside it was cold as the snow fell, but inside, the mug pressed into Saionji’s hands was warm and his shivering ceased. He brought the mug to his mouth, eager for more of that respite, but recoiled almost instantly at the contact with the steaming hot liquid. And Touga, suddenly close, said, “Careful, don’t burn your tongue.” And then he was right there, and his mouth was far too warm, but Saionji’s shivers returned with a vengeance.

“Here.”

Saionji’s eyes flutter open and his scowl deepens as he takes the proffered mug. Any fond feelings he associates with the memory are gone as he thinks of the blank expression Touga welcomed him with.

“Thanks,” he replies scathingly, but Touga merely nods and sits beside him with his own mug.

Saionji raises the drink to his frowning lips, unthinking, and starts when Touga’s hand is suddenly on his wrist, halting him. And then he’s right there, and it’s frightening how he does that, and he’s close enough that Saionji can feel the heat of his smirk as he says, “Careful, don’t burn your tongue.”

By the time either of them actually get around to drinking their hot chocolate, it’s gone cold, but Saionji thinks he might be warm forever.
