“Cas, get out of my ass!”
“I was never…”
And then there came the pause that would change lives.
The thought never came up before. They were just so busy with so many things happening all at once that it never even occurred to Dean, until now. One careless comment, an aborted reply and an awkward pause where there should be none were all it took.
They were three seconds that Dean could never get back. Three seconds that brought to the fore the long untold history of forty years, of the weeks and months of waiting for the end, of the desolate future that never was, and of the present that happened for a day that had gone past.
Three seconds where the unasked questions were laid bare.
An angel in love with him.
Were you?
Would you?
Could it be?
The silence came and went, and there wasn’t enough time once again. The window of opportunity for things to be said had gone. It wasn’t the right moment, it never was the right time.
But what if.
What if.
Like a seed, this thought would sink, and root and bloom. And perhaps one day, there would be time enough for words.
