Brody Theater news
If you're on the friends list of lindykerry or thatbrodyguy, you've seen this news already, but the Brody Theater is getting kicked out of their space, as the Portland real estate market finally caught up with that little out of the way corner at 27th and Vaughn. The property owners are selling the building.
I'm saddened by the news. I was one of a small group of folks who built that place, literally and figuratively. There are lights there that Tom and I built out of paint cans, painted teal, and screwed into the ceiling. I think we called them the Teal 2000's. Slowly we added actual fixtures, but two of those Teal 2000's have been in the same place for about 9 years and are still there at this moment.
Losing a space is common. What's uncommon, and admirable, is that the Brody's actually having its best year yet. Businesses rarely last for 10 years. Let alone live theaters. That focus on improv. So, good on you, Brody Theater. I'm proud to claim association.
But at least the press coverage of it looks to be good - The Oregonian's listings mention it ("catch it while you can") and they posted to their blog the same day the news broke, as did the Willy Week ("eviction marks the disappearance of one of only two spaces in town dedicated to improv").
Catch the Brody at their original home in the next three weeks if you can, because the next scheduled show is in Amsterdam. I may try to make it up for the final weekend, if only to nab a Teal 2000 for a keepsake.
