I feel like Brown also noted that, in the case of schools, they were NOT equal and, by dint of being separate, they never could be. The black schools were much more poorly funded, etc.

From that perspective, I don't feel that Brown really is all that applicable. The law cannot mandate that all marriages are equal.

I personally feel that the word "marriage" (and related words) should be applied only to the church ceremony. No church has to accept any other church's sacraments (cf: Catholics don't let non-Catholics take communion in their rites) and there's no requirement that Baptists have to recognize a couple that was handfasted, sealed in the Temple, or considered married under common-law.

That said, the LDS church has no business taking tax-free status while donating money in a political fight.
