If you were going to devote almost a half sleeve (of tattoos that is) to Tom Robbins' novels, mainly--but not necessarily exclusively--Skinny Legs and All, how would you do it ( Read more... )

Get your tattoo artist to read the first couple pages, the ones with the endless supply of crazy imagery. Then let them figure something out and either approve of it or don't. I feel like letting someone who presumably knows their limits as an artist have free rein is really within the spirit of the book, and there's no shortage of fun stuff just in that first couple pages for said artist to work on.

Personally, I'd have a can o' beans, purple sock, and silver spoon etched next to a conch shell and wooden stick. Cavorting as they may on flesh....

Please post the end result when you have it etched.

Many kisses,
Windi

With so many "symbols" in tattoos, I've actually been fond of seeing just plain English text (not Old English or anything, just regular fonts) in tats.

It wouldn't fill your whole arm, what about filling in gaps with choice quotes ("we're making it up, all of us") or even just pieces of sentences chosen at random (close your eyes, open teh book, point at the page, and read). This second option may also serve as another way to discover symbols and imagery you may have forgotten from the novel, should you stumble upon the right sentences.

Ugh. I truly meant to write open "the" book. I've never intentionally mispelled that in my life. I feel so dumb seeing it in something I wrote. Blah.

Every day I wish that I had gotten a Skinny Legs and All tattoo. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy the woodpecker on my arm, but Skinny Legs and All is by far my favorite of Robbins' books.

As far as imagery goes, I think that having some of the main (inanimate) characters is probably a good idea. The turkey-mobile, of course, is another strong image in my head -- although probably not something you'd want etched on your body forever. A coat with hundreds of tiny pockets?
And then, yes, as spacekadette mentioned, sentences/phrases from the book would probably work pretty well.

(I realize I could still get a Skinny Legs tattoo, but I don't want to just get a bunch of Robbins-themed tattoos, much as I love his work)
