Pastiche is riche

I am having a great week by myself and it is all literary and cinematically based.  I am reading Another Roadside Attraction for the first time ever (I was reading the rather lackluster Fierce Invalids...for the first time, but I just couldn't get into it.) Skinny Legs and All and Even Cowgirls...are the only Robbins I have read, but I am indeed a ( Read more... )

Fierce Invalids got off to a slow start, but I eventually got really into it.

My faves in order:

Another Roadside Attraction
Jitterbug Perfume
Still Life with Woodpecker
Even Cowgirls Get The Blues
Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates
Skinny Legs & All
Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas
Villa Incogneto
Wild Ducks Flying Backwards

I agree, Fierce Invalids is definitely one you have to give time to get started.

I agree that Fierce Invalids was not classic Robbins. When I read it I wondered if he had veered off into a new direction. However, Villa Incognito restored my faith.

I'm not sure that I could pick a favorite. Most of them have been my fave at one point or another because of what was going in my life at the time. I read Still Life with Woodpecker first and it seems to hold a lightly more special place in my heart than the others.

i agree with you on fierce invalids, when i finished it i was lacking that fresh lookout on life feeling that i usually get with his writing, i still have half asleep in frog pajamas to get into, i've started it two or three times but i'm just not feeling it...

roadside attraction is one of my favorites along with skinny legs...whenever i'm feeling stuck and bored with my life i pick up one of these and it always leaves me feeling refreshed...

Thank you. You hit the nail on the head for me. While the 80 pages I had thus far read did make me laugh from time to time, none of it really had me looking at my life in any new magical way. I was missing that magic.

I have this irrational love for Switters... havocmangawip August 16 2007, 05:50:39 UTC
then again, I love rogues. I also love anything about "the Company". The concept of angels and cowboys? I just got really into it.

My first Robbins exposure was "Jitterbug Perfume". I was in the library and liked the title. Then I was hooked.

I'm having a hard time with "Villa Incognito", but when I started it I was in a bad attention span space. I don't think I would have liked ANYTHING then.

I think Sailor Boy did it for me... "People of the whirl... RELAX!" It's one of my favorite sayings ever.

Well, that and places being "too damned vivid".
