Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

I think you're being a wee bit harsh there, and that "prudence" in the way it is being used in the statement simply means we shouldn't jump on the first solution to global warming that presents itself (eg a Jonathan Swift/ Billy Connolly "let's all eat one person each" plan, although I'm taking this to the extremes here, naturally)
As for the religious overtones, he IS the Pope - it's kinda in the job description y'know? ;)

Well yes, if the Pope had actually been saying anything like what the Daily Mail had been saying I'd be more annoyed. But as the Deltoid link says, that's not actually what he did say.

But you must admit that first paragraph is a bit ridiculous :-)
