Twice during the past year I had to fight the reviewers that tried their best to kill my manuscript because it did not have a hypothesis - which I would fail to reject. How would I have a hypothesis if it's a fresh new field, for God's sake? I won at the end, but it took me ~9 months in both cases. Hated it.
