Slytherin House Traits, Part 1

Jun 22, 2007 22:08

Vote for your favorite set of House Traits as turned in by your housemates. The second part, where you vote on the traits you want on your 'cheatsheet' comes later, I need this part going first, since it's for points. Voting will end next Thursday, June 28th.

Set A:

-Subtle humour
-Ambition, though it doesn't have to be toward a great big end goal
-A kind of 'I don't care what people think about me, I'm me and I like me' attitude

Set B:
A Slytherin is someone who is snarky, ambitious, and driven. They don't take shit from anybody, and when somebody DOES try to get all holier than thou, we point and mock them. We keep to ourselves mostly and don't take kindly to strangers, but we're deeply loyal to our own. We'll defend our own to the point of exhaustion, but if one of our own does something that is truly *facepalm* worthy, we'll point and mock, albeit, privately and away from the other houses.

We always put on that lovely face to the people in authority and we always act the innocent, when in reality, there is a very Machiavellian surge within each of us and we won't hesitate to knock down the poor sucker who stands in our way. We act innocent but we're always somewhere at the middle of the shit storm.

We'll have the first snarky cat macros and they'll always be the best. Pampered children who get way more credit then they deserve are always brought down a peg or two.

When others are racing off to defeat whatever big bad is out there, we'll give our advice (and they'd better take it) and then we'll exit. Why? Because we're not STUPID! Honestly, who chases after a troll at 12 years old?

We're just shy of being Ravenclaw's becuase we ARE all smart and ambitious, but it's that extra edge that seperates us from them. That extra bit of snarkdom that possesses NO kind words and no gentle banter. We're not Hufflepuff because we can recognize a soft-hearted buffoon when we see one, and we also know that THOSE are the people to be stepped on. Gryffindor? Well, those are very brave and upright people, but they're also the ones who assume they're right becuase of their morals. We know good and Hell well that it's not the morals that determine what's right, but what the outcome will be, because that's what history is based on. The winners are hte heroes. WE understand that.

We are not evil. We know what we like. We know when something is wrong. We're on the side that we know will win. We don't take kindly to stupidity. We're snarky and ambitious. We're smart and sassy. Sarcasm rules our world. Mockery is a big thing of ours.

Set C:

Slytherins and Gryffindors can be similar in many ways; however, I think the most notable difference is where Gryffindors are bold and brash in that they are unafraid of being an individual, Slytherins are much more subtle and sly, being part of the crowd rather than putting themselves on display for all to see. Slytherins are aloof due to their observant nature - they want to watch you for a while, see whether or not you can be trusted, before they let you close to them. Slytherins play things very close to the chest, as they know better than most that character assassination is easier when you have actual information with which to slay your opponent. They do not forgive easily nor do they forget (c.f. Snape re: the Marauders; Harry’s disregard of Draco’s offer of friendship in Sorcerer’s Stone). They greatly abhor failure (c.f. Slytherin reactions to Quidditch losses, esp. to Gryffindor), and tend to be perfectionists. As such, they are also very competitive. Many times, this feeds the smug confidence and/or pride that Slytherins have and are unafraid to flaunt. Slytherins have a deep self-knowledge, which most definitely feeds their ambition. While Gryffindors and Ravenclaws can both be idealistic and dreamers, Slytherins are dreamers with a plan. They know what they want; they know they can get it; they will do whatever it takes to achieve their goal. On the negative side, though, this ambition can lead quickly to self-delusion, a false sense of confidence, and an off-putting swagger in their step. They can be seen as maniacally manipulative, heartless and needlessly cruel in grasping for what they want.

Another characteristic found in most of us here is ambition: ‘an earnest desire for some type of achievement or distinction, as power, honor, fame, or wealth, and the willingness to strive for its attainment’ (www.dicitionary.com, ‘ambition’). I think the latter part of that definition is what sets Slytherins apart in my mind. It’s all fine and well to dream - all the other Houses have members that are idealists. However, Slytherin idealists will in fact do whatever it takes to achieve the ideal. Again, it takes many forms: from pulling off an ambitious charity fundraiser to world domination. It’s a very wide spectrum. I think it’s canonically personified in the competition that Slytherins display. Slytherins are competitive to a fault. They are easily made envious, and if they think they can do better than you, you had best watch your back.

I think for those of us here at HiH, there is a very strong sense of competitiveness in regards to points. However, we are a very small, very discriminating (i.e. elite) group, which is both a blessing and a curse. We are very picky about who we let into the House, and do not have very much tolerance for those fakers trying to ingratiate themselves through their app when clearly they belong elsewhere. I think for us, we get a lot of Slytherdors - people like Harry and Draco in canon that have lots of traits from both Houses. That isn't to say that we don't have some slinking around with 'clawish tendencies, but I would say the majority of us tend towards Slytherdor a lot of the time.

Set D:
Positives
  • Cunning, obviously. It's canon.
  • Ambitious, also obviously. Also canon.
  • Resourceful. This comes from both cunning an ambitious. A smart person with their eye on the prize does not dismiss anything that might be of use, whether it's information or people-power.
  • Accepting/Open-Minded. This goes with resourceful. People are a recourse that simply can't be replaced easily. Dismissing someone because of a trait that doesn affect their usefulness is just stupid.
  • Practical. Impossible ambitions aren't ambitions at all. They're dreams.
  • Focused/Driven. When there's a goal in sight, they're there.

    Negatives
  • Overconfidence. We're terrible about over-estimating our abilities and odds.
  • Tunnel-vision. When we're aiming for something, we sometimes let other equally important things fall by the way-side.
  • Easily discouraged. When the world is shining and within our grasp, Slytherins chase it hard. But when we're so far behind the race it's laughable, we tend to vanish quietly into the crowd.
  • Impatient. We want it, and we want it now.
  • Sharp-tongued. Tactful? Slytherin? Sometimes, but not in times of annoyance or pressure. We're quick to lay into someone if they we feel the need. We can be masters of sarcasm and scathing wit, usually to our detriment.
  • Headstrong. We're determined to have our own way and be right, even when we shouldn't and we're not.

  • Set E:
    - Strong ambition towards something (world domination, saving the world, and all the little things in between - it doesn't have to be big to be strong)
    - A sense that the person knows themselves well, knows their goals well, and knows how to use themselves to get the goal. And that they're comfortable with that aspects on themselves.
    - Presents themselves well; isn't sloppy and puts their 'best foot forward'.
    - Overconfidence in their ability to do practical things. (If they're overconfident about less practical things, I see a Gryffindor.)
    - Someone who can be cunning and knows it. It's more important to show that you're cunning in real life than it is to be lying/sneaking on the application.
