I think focus on making it a party that they'll really enjoy. That's what my parents did for their anniversary.

40th is Ruby, which is fortunately very easy to theme arouond with red things. Red wine, obvs, but red themed cocktails? By the time they've been married this long they've already set up house (well, unless they haven't), so gifts are usually of the celebratory "have a thing!" kind like ornaments or joke gifts.

For a gift, a slide shot or video compilation that tells a story is always nice. If you have pictures of them through out their childhoods or lives, you could do a story of their life in pictures to show at the party, then give them a burned DVD of it.

Just an idea!
