I Should be Happy...

And I am, mostly. I'm glad Obama won the presidency, but I'm saddened and frightened by the fact that both Amendment 2 and Prop 8 passed. Now it is true that there was no chance Florida would ever defeat Amendment 2, but for Californians to amend their constitution to enshrine discrimination is beyond me. While Obama has been the most inclusive ( Read more... )

You brought tears to my eyes.

Speaking on behalf of my flawed adopted state, I'm sorry. I was shocked when I saw the results last night, to be honest. I had doubts about Obama winning, and didn't really accept it until his speech, but I never once had a doubt about Prop 8. How could it pass? What kind of people are we, to believe hate-mongering and division will help our children instead of harm them?

Now people are saying either this will overturned by the courts (which I'm hoping for) or it'll be back on the ballot next year. Either way, I pray a happy outcome is still possible.

Hugs to you and Michael!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I ache with bemusement that I can live in a country that can do the most diametrically opposing things, especially when it comes to politics and ethics. How people can be "pro-life" and love hunting animals for sport boggles the mind. How people want their kids to grow up being educated and loving and accepting of people in all walks of life but don't want civil rights for EVERY American kills me inside. I look at Barack and see hope that his being elected is the first step toward fully realizing that homophobia is the racism of this century and that just as much can and will be done to overcome such intolerance.

I'm, sucha huge pile of emo today.

They can't nullify your marriage- it's unconstitutional for laws to apply retrospectively, and therefore only prospective "homo unions" in California will be affected. So, breathe easy on that. Were I you, my concern would be about which states you can live in that will recognize your marriage. I'm glad we're in a blue state for the time-being, but I was also saddened by the astounding margin of victory Amendment 2 enjoyed here. Florida sucks, and because of DOMA (and Clinton!!) and the socially conservative swing we are seeing I think that more states are likely to find themselves embroiled in such initiatives in the near future.
