Before Nihil
Lawliet doesn't really know his past. All he remembers is wandering the streets of some small town watching people. A few kind souls would occasionally give him something to eat (usually a sweet of some sort) or clothes to wear, but for the most part he fended for himself. This was easy, considering he watched people enough to tell which ones were more likely to give him something if he crouched on a convenient street corner long enough and which ones would hurt him if he stuck around them for too long. It was a simple life and he was content, if not bored.
This all changed when he met Quillsh Wammy.
"Wa-Mi-san," as he called him, was one of those people who regularly gave him sweets and food and even clothing whenever they ran into each other on the streets. These meetings eventually increased until it actually became a routine: Lawliet would wander the streets at night, go to a specific park bench, Wammy would give him something sweet and something hot to eat and possibly a change of clothes depending on how muddy the ones he was wearing were. Repeat at noon and then towards the evening. After a while they wound up talking a bit and Wammy recognized his intellect for what it was and told the boy when he was done working, he would bring the boy with him to England.
One day, it was raining heavily and Wammy decided to take Lawliet to his place of work. The boy was chronically thin despite how many sweets he was given and he worried about how the boy seemed to get little sleep. He told Lawliet to stay in his office as he wasn't supposed to be there and told him to sleep after making up a makeshift bed under his desk. Lawliet protested, but Wammy was firm, telling him he'd just be bored otherwise and besides, he'd have a nice strawberry cheesecake ready for him when he woke up.
A few hours later, Lawliet awoke from one of the many nightmares he suffered, crying. Unable to get back to sleep and with Wammy missing, he decided to see what was going on in the hallway, wanting to find Wammy. Along the way, he saw several people he had ofen seen on the streets - the bad kind he tended to avoid and avoid them he did. He eventually found Wammy coming out of a room looking upset and like he had been arguing with someone and decided to tell him about the bad people he saw and what he thought they were going to do. Wammy looked alarmed when he told him, told Lawliet to leave the building to avoid them and that if they didn't meet up the next day, to deny he knew anything. Lawliet did as he was told and waited for three days by the park bench he regularly met up with Wammy at.
Just when he was going to leave, the gentleman showed up with the strawberry cheesecake he promised, a thermos of tea, and adoption papers. Wammy kept his word and brought Lawliet to Winchester, in hopes of educating him and giving him a proper environment to have a normal childhood.
At least that was the plan.
Two years later, Wammy had removed Lawliet from public schooling, realizing Lawliet was better off teaching himself and found the boy actually liked detective work and was good at it. Adding into the fact his previous employers had been repeatedly asking for the detective who had helped solve the Winchester Mad Bombings two years ago and could he please get in contact with him again? They'd love to speak with him, the stage was set for the boy to slowly rise as the world's leading detective.
This was when Lawliet - affectionately nicknamed "L" by Wammy - was brought into Nihil.
