A discussion on a board I frequent along with a trip to the symphony this weekend prompted this post about formality, and how much we take it into account. I was expecting you to say that they wear jeans to the symphony in Europe. And I would have almost believed you. I'm not entirely surprised that custom in Europe is less "formal" than in the U.S. My hypothesis would be that "traditional" threads in U.S. culture, historically, are descended or copied from the most aristocratic of European practices. Not sure if that's right, though.

I make it a point to wear trashy clothes to nice venues just to piss off the vanilla folk. YMMV
