There is a typo that I neglected to fix from the original text- the rule of thumb was that a man couldn't beat his wife w/ a stick larger than his thumb or that he could beat his wife with a stick no larger than his thumb. If you include both negatives it means a man could only beat his wife w/ a stick larger than his thumb, which is incorrect.
