They always did say it was about the both of them throughout the anime, but for some reason it's so easy to disbelieve Ed on that point. There just reached a point where he didn't seem to care about the automail in the way he still so *very* much cared about Al's body.
So, um, this made me very sad. But thank you for it all the same ;)

I agree. I've written *so* many fics of Ed realizing it's not going to happen, or giving up or... just variations of the idea. anime-verse, movie-verse, AU- I can't do it for the manga, though. Probably because it's not quite the same. Ed doesn't feel like he's dropped himself as a priority there.
Also, I noticed I messed up on the time-line thanks to your comment... *Fixes*
