Any thoughts?

Someone gave me their retired race horse (they rescued her from being culled) when she died. She died before I injured my foot, spring 2010, and about the time I injured my foot, fall 2010, was the ideal time for me to pick her up so by the time I was hobbling in my own shoes, spring 2011, she was totally stripped of flesh by the elements ( Read more... )

Are all of the legs like that on the inside? If they aren't, that's what I'd take as a sign of abnormality.

I did a bit of googling and didn't find anything about the inside of a leg bone. My Google-fu fails me, I guess. The best approach to inquiring would be to approach horse savvy people [forums or vets might be good].

I've noticed that bones that have been allowed to be cleaned "naturally" tend to have their insides cleaned as well.

The elk bones were also cleaned naturally before I started to degrease. They stayed inside a makeshift compost heap for as long as the horse stayed under a tarp and tires.
