Taemin thinks his Hyung is weird at most times. He says weird things and does weird things. Like that time in the car when he began to warble the lyrics of ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ while they were on their way to their M!countdown performance. Or like when he told Taemin another time while they were backstage waiting for their turn on Inkigayo, very seriously, that he believed that the cordi noonas were actually aliens from outer space.
But the weirdest thing however, had to be Jinki’s early morning ritual.
Taemin discovered it one day when he actually woke up before Jinki. Usually an early riser - or at least an earlier riser than Jinki would have already dragged himself from bed and into the bathroom long before Taemin actually had even cracked an eye open.
But that day, Taemin had woken up to find that there was still a lump on the bed where there were usually neatly folded sheets. And even as he watched, blinking bleary unfocused vision out of his eyes, the lump moved.
It was with no small amount of bewilderment and disbelief that he watched the covers slowly unveil a small hermit-like creature that slowly began to crawl it’s way towards the door.
Then, the moment it reached close proximity to the doorframe, the creature leapt up onto legs and transformed into his Hyung, Lee Jinki. And he could only wave back dumbly when Jinki turned around with a sunny smile and chirpy good morning before he swiftly marched off into the bathroom like nothing weird had happened.
Needless to say, Taemin immediately pushed it into the back of his mind, treating it as ‘one of those things’.
But then he saw it for a second time. And a third. And a couple of times more. And each time, the exact same thing happenes - Jinki crawling off the bed on all fours before he leaps upright at the door and greeting Taemin in a way that makes the younger feel that he needs to be checked into a mental hospital.
Then finally, Taemin can’t stand it anymore, and one morning, straight after Jinki leaps up, he calls after his Hyung and receives a patiently curious look in return.
“Hyung… why do you always literally crawl out of bed in the morning?” Taemin asks to a bemused expression, and he’s a little irritated to find that Jinki is looking at him as if he’d asked the stupidest question on the face of the earth.
“Because you have to crawl before you can walk.” Jinki answers simply to a stunned expression. And he tilts his head in confusion when Taemin’s mouth opens and closes like a goggling goldfish.
Finally, Taemin just shakes his head and flops it down onto his pillow, because, heck, it was too early in the morning to deal with Jinki’s weirdness, waving a limp hand at the cheery sound of Jinki’s morning greeting.
But Taemin didn’t see when Minho peeked inside before raising an eyebrow at Jinki only to receive an innocent look in reply. Because Minho knows, because he’s the earliest riser in the dorm and he’s seen how Jinki usually wakes up - and it does not usually involve crawling out of bed in such a literal manner.
It’s only when the both of them hear sobs in the night, muffled by blankets, that Jinki would suddenly acquire his strange morning habit. Because there is that stress when times are tough that the whole group feels, but the youngest is most affected because as mature as he seems, Taemin is still young - far too young to be revealed to the pressure of working life.
That day, when the recording drags on until 1 a.m. the next morning, and Taemin’s tired eyes flit over to Jinki, who looks as if he’s about to fall off his chair, Taemin thinks that it’s likely that he’ll see Jinki’s morning ritual again because of this and unwittingly, a smile crosses his face.
