I won't disagree about the unpleasantness of those things. The only consolation I can offer is that the counter point to quantity is often quality. I'd take a couple of rock solid friendships over a larger number of less substantial ones any day.
And, for the record, I'll bring my own shovel if you should need a hand with that sort of thing some time.
