The train journey from Mallaig to Fort William is regarded as one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. I have done it before, just on the ordinary train, and it really is a great trip. For many years it has been one of the few parts of the main-line network that had a regular steam hauled train in the summer - known as The Jacobite ( Read more... )

Fabulous photos. Glad you had such good weather. I had a very happy husband when we did the trip too :)

Thank you! We were so fortunate with the weather. My daughter says there was one nice day at home whilst we were away, and otherwise it was cool and damp.

I remember crossing that, on a steam train pulling old fashioned compartmentalised carriages, on the way to a sci-fi convention in Glasgow, about forty-five years ago! I had just booked a train journey, with no clue what I would be travelling on, so it was quite a pleasant surprise, even to twenty-odd year old ignorant me.

What lovely scenery! Not being a huge HP fan and having seen the movies only once, I wouldn't have recognized the locale straight off, but it did look familiar, and that's probably why.

Sometimes one can get the impression, these days, that JK Rowling invented the North of Scotland, trains, and the Glenfinnan viaduct!

But it is a beautifully wild landscape, and the viaduct is a wonder of late Victorian engineering - and the engine that pulled our train was built in 1937 which makes it a similar age to the one JKR describes - even though she says it was built 100 years earlier.

What a great train journey! It is a classic, especially on a steam hauled train.

It really is a classic - and it was lovely to do it first class and steam hauled this time :)

I enjoyed your pics and video. It's been too many decades since I've been on a train but love watching the scenery go by.
