The train journey from Mallaig to Fort William is regarded as one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. I have done it before, just on the ordinary train, and it really is a great trip. But it is a beautifully wild landscape, and the viaduct is a wonder of late Victorian engineering - and the engine that pulled our train was built in 1937 which makes it a similar age to the one JKR describes - even though she says it was built 100 years earlier.
