Wonderful decorations, and I love your pumpkins. I totally agree, a pumpkin is a sight easier to carve than a rutabaga.

Neeps are the very devil to peel (which is why I now use carrots to go with my haggis) so I can only imagine the torments of carving them.

I was taught as a child to first slice them into discs about 1" wide. Then you can easily peel each slice with a small knife and then chop it.

But carving them was such a pain, literally! My icon is a turnip lantern - I admit to not carving it :)

It didn't occur to me until I was in my twenties, and saw someone trying to peel the whole thing with a potato peeler, that not everyone did it the way I was taught - and as you realised, it really is the only way not to get the urge to throw the whole thing away!

I have to admit, though, that with haggis is the only time I would cook it these days :)
