He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said. [Job 2:10]

Oh Job, you and your wisdom.

Hey Jenni, I read this passage in your journal and interpreted it most differently. Throughout the Bible, ever since Eve and the Temptation and the Fall, women have been portrayed at dirty and unclean; the reason that man must work for a living, for sustinence, and die. I feel that this is just another example of that: the woman trying to tempt man away from God, just like Eve. I find this passage somewhat degrading to women, and that is what stands out most to me, not the wisdom. This, however, is just my opinion, so I decided, after much deliberation, to share it. I don't want to upset anyone, but I figure, if you're posting these things, you're looking for feedback from all different viewpoints. I hope it's okay that I posted this here.

I understand what you mean! But I think if you look at it in context, you'll see that it really isn't offensive to women. Job was miserable because God was allowing Satan to test him, and it got so bad that Job's wife said "Curse God and die already!" (not her exact words). This verse shows Job's commitment to God. If a man had said it to Job, Job would have had the same response. "Stop acting like an idiot!"

I do, however, understand what you mean about some of the stories in the Bible being degrading to women. I think, though, that the seemingly degrading portrayal of women is small and secondary compared to all of the other wisdom that the Bible has to offer.

How are you doing, anyway? How's college? Aren't you graduating this year? Are you nervous?? <333

Hey, I also understand what you mean about the search for wisdom through the Bible. I suppose it all depends on the role that Christianity plays in your life. The degrading views of women in the Bible most definitely come second to you, because you search for different things. To me, one who does not search for wisdom in the Bible, this degradation seems much more prominent. Correct me if I'm wrong in saying I believe myself to be much more of a liberal and a feminist than you perhaps are, and I also search for meaning and wisdom in different texts. So, the roles of women in the Bible have a much different connotation to me. Neither view is more or less right, it just all depends on one's religion and/or spirituality.

Things here are good. I am graduating in May, it's pretty crazy. I'm excited, though. How are you? How is college?

You are most definitely more of a liberal and a feminist than I am! I'm very traditional and reserved about a lot of things.

I'm great and college is great! I'm only a sophomore, though, so I've got a long ways to go, but it's all going very well. I still haven't decided on a major - but we'll see what happens!
