I really can't relate, but I was thinking about this recently. Holidays that are specific (i.e. mother/father's day. Christmas or thanksgiving can really include anyway) either are wonderful or horrible. If you have good parents it is a chance to be thankful, but if your parents suck it is a reminder of everything you don't have. I was thinking how fortunate I am that I don't have to be sad on days like this. So I guess in the grand scheme of life it is probably better to have had something good for a short amount of time than have something that never was worthwhile for a long time. at least there are happy memories to fall back on.
