Does anyone have a recommendation for a good bank where there is no minimum amount to open a checking account and they don't assess fees to maintain said account ( Read more... )

If you want this for long term savings and not actual checking, you should look into Ing Direct, online. Decent interest rates for a bank account, and pretty easy electronic transfers between your Ing and regular checking accounts.

I agree with the ING idea. I have several accounts with them and if you sign up after a friend sends you the "hey sign up" email, you get $25 just for signing up and the friend gets $10.

Wainwright, Wainwright, Wainwright!

Wainwright Bank has exactly such accounts. They are also known explicitly for supporting the gay, lesbian, and other "alternative" communities. We use them and they are FABULOUS! Real human service, not recorded messages! What a concept!

Most of their branches are in the greater Boston area...but they offer debit cards and allow free use of SUM ATM's (Citizens Bank is on the SUM ATM network, among others) - and if you're using this as primarily a savings account, sometimes not having easy access to it is a GOOD thing! :)

Also worth noting, they will let you open an account online! :)

Used to be good, 5 or so years ago when I lived in Boston.
