I think the best way to handle it is to write (and encourage others) to complain. It's not tv land's fireworks, their Boston's fireworks. You're a part of Boston...and this country. Just because Pope Bush has decided that we are a Christian country, doesn't make him right. Independence Day is supposed to be about coming together to be Americans (for at least one day), not coming together to be religious. That's why it's a secular holiday. And, every freakin' holiday does not need to be Made for Television.
To be fair, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is a world-renowned chorus and I don't think their presence was an attempt at Christianization (although I did feel the program overall was a bit squicky). Also, the 1812 Overture does have a traditional choral part at the beginning. (Some recordings contain it, some do not.)
I was upset with a lot of what they did, but the MTC is actually an excellent group, and I don't think their affiliation was intentional. (The choice in other songs, yes, that was intentional.)
I was pissed off by the over religiousity of it, too. We were sitting close enough to hear the concert. I remember commenting to J-bear about the Battle Hymn of the Republic (Glory Glory Hallelujah). sigh. I was also quite put off by the repeated intermissions (commercial?) and the lack of the POPS which I had wanted to go hear. It was too much other stuff and NOT enough Boston Pops.
