I had one that was rather expensive, about $100 that I got for a gift. I broke it and there was no way I could afford another good one. I just recently got this one...I was amazed when I found it for this price, the last one I got for $20 was a hunk of junk. You can adjust the heat setting up to 420F. Sometimes I use it to get it super straight, and others I use a lower heat setting just to make my curls wavy and manageable instead. It comes with a little comb attachment that is useful but gets stuck sometimes. It's removable though.
If you want curls you'd need a curling iron, I don't know anything about those however. I think they make ones that you can use to straighten as well...

After I wash and condition my hair, I put it in a tight bun to keep it from curling. I let it dry like this for as long as I can. Then I blow dry while brushing with a regular brush to get my hair completely dry. At this point my hair looks like hermione's from the first HP movie. Then I'll use the curling iron same way I'd use the straightening iron to smooth it all out. I often use a bit of straightening serum to protect my hair from all the heat. I'll also occasionally go back in and put some large curls in my hair if I desire.
Hope that helps! I haven't used my straightening iron in ages!
