I have an old friend I am seeing in a couple of days. She has been quite seriously ill for the past 12 months. She had to leave work, have operations and has been pretty much housebound the whole time. She spends most of her time watching DVDs and I want to get her a good box set. Question is, which one? I am loving that series so much! It's on the list. I think this is going to come down to what's left on the shelf...

The Shield - not quite in the same league as The Wire, but still pretty amazing. Lots of interesting female characters, too, though I'm not too sure it passes the Bechdel test.

I think I'm going to put that one on my list to investigate. I thought the lack of interesting female characters was the one thing that let The Wire down. I have wondered a few times about what it would have been like if they had focused on women for a season, in the same way they focused on politics/school/the projects. I know we could be found in all those places, but I felt the women they did show were either invisible or peripheral. So, The Shield. I will check it out.
