Sounds like they think you don't want to play at all, money or not. Maybe you need to bring across, that you actually want to play, but that it's really hard for you without payment...You know, a bit more positive, not "I don't want to unless there is money" (which, yes, is the truth), but "I would absolutely LOVE to, but see, I have to make x extra trips and turn down y other gigs, so it's SO HARD for me to make that time, but if they were willing to compensate you, ABSOLUTELY, and you are looking forward to it..." (which may be a modified truth, but is more diplomatic and makes them feel better).
They do want me to play - for free! Everbody else from outside would cost money. They simply don't care that I already do so much more extra work than I'd have to.
They are looking for somebody else because it is still cheaper for them to pay somebody else more than I'd ask than to pay all teachers who play. But I doubt if they will find somebody. They don't have many contacts. They asked Gottfried who of course told them he would not stab me in the back by playing there, and of course he won't give them any other contact. My sister won't do that either if they ask her. It has to be somebody very experienced seen that long program, so I doubt if they will find somebody - for a cheap price.
I also have the feeling that they see it as a "punishment" - "if you don't play for free, you are not allowed to play at all". Those half-professionals or even laypersons can't immagine that one is happy not having to play.
