yes, one time i was coming home from a long trip and i was fined $100 for overweight luggage at the counter. it was very stressful so it's much better for you to keep track of the weight before you get to the airport.
i've never though about it, but you're right. even if everyone's luggage conforms to the weight limit, what about the extra kg that come from passengers of varying size?
yeah...same happened to me last year -__- This time, I have too many hand luggages...one camera bag, one little rolling one, and a bag with stuff I couldn't find a place to put in... And the big one seems to have some 1 or 2kg over.. well, now I kinda don't care, as long as I can get everything home.. maybe I have to pay some cash, but if I'm lucky, they'll put it as "heavy". They were kind when I was flying to Japan, they put "heavy" on it, my mum and I were worried that it wouldn't go, so we were prepared to take out some stuff if it was overweighted, but luckily they didn't say anything, even if it was like 21-22kg. I hope this time will go as well! ><
