queer film & books

Between travelling last week and being on vacation this week, I've been able to start catching up on some reading.

"Best Little Boy in the World" was recently re-released on it's 25th year anniversary. It's kind of a litmus test for queerness.. at least for me. it seemed like a completely different book than it did back then. Bi content - he makes a"prayer" for his bi friend to learn to love who he is, as he is. That was rare in gay memoirs from the 80's.

I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of the follow up book (it should be here tomorrow), so I can find out how he turned out.

I just finished "A Killer Life" by Christine Vachon. I couldn't put it down!!! It's weird - the book is about being a producer in Hollywood. Hardly a fascinating topic. But Christine is THE producer. She has produced 4 of my top 5.5 queer films (5.5 because Shortbus will be rounding this out once I finally get a copy of the dvd). She makes the types of movies I have to watch over a dozen times . . . the ones that I get cravings for . . . the ones that are guaranteed to round out an evening. Velvet Goldmine, Camp, Hedwig, Go Fish, and Boys Don't Cry. It's only recently that I even started to think that producers matter. But I can't argue that she seems to make movies for ME!

Sure she's make Kiss me Guido and Office Killer, but pretty much everything she touches is golden. The book is as good as her films. Completely readable. I some how fell in love with her while reading this. *sigh*

I'd definitely recommend it.

I'm now on a mission to watch all her movies. The hardest acquisition (Superstar: the carpenters story) turned out to be the easiest to find. Google has it.

I'm about to start "My Undoing (Love in the thick of sex, drugs, pornography, and prostitution)" by Aiden Shaw
