Synopsis: Kouyou finds his life ruled by the glimpses of him he can see.
Kouyou took a deep breath.
- It feels like we're out of reality.
- In outer space.
A hum of agreement.
- It's like finding shelter here. To put a distance between life and us.
Stars sparkling a few light years away.
- Don't you want to feel numb at times?
- To be impervious to most emotions you feel?
- Like this.
- I do.
Kouyou smiled and his eyes shone. Yuu turned his head and looked at him, his black mask, the feathers there and the thin sheet of water in his eyes.
- That's why you were high last time?
His eyes closed. Yuu could swear a tear had died behind the mask.
- Yeah.
A hoarse voice.
- And now how do you feel?
A loud sigh.
- I feel too much. The setting is breathtaking. I hate stars.
Yuu frowned and leaned against an elbow to slightly sit up and look at the stranger's face better.
- They're so beautiful you hate them?
- They're already dead and we still think they're alive. They're liars. I despise lies.
Kouyou had depicted his own portrait like a painter in front of his canvas.
- But at night if I look up at the sky, they're here. They're always here. Even if our reality is different, in mine, they're still here, with me. And I want to live with this idea until I die and join them one day.
As if Kouyou had ignored his words, he simply stated:
- The Moon's always here.
- But it changes constantly. You can't count on it to still be the same the day after.
- Side by side with the Earth. The Moon's faithful. It might change but it's a regular cycle it's following and you know that if you count the days well, it will be here. When the Moon's up there, it's not as dark as it's supposed to be.
A last movement of his brush, Kouyou painted Yuu.
- We need them both, the Moon and the stars.
Kouyou's eyes meet Yuu's and he smiled at his words. Thoughts flowing, a natural osmosis.
And I need you in my life, as much as I deny it.
Yuu was tilting his head, his gaze lost above:
- Have you thought about a world without stars? Without the Moon?
- It would be a perfect chaos.
- Maybe we'd be living counting on other signs.
- Like what?
- We'd be living as blind people. Following our instincts and trusting our senses.
- Can I rewind time and record everything you told me?
Yuu held out a finger and pressed it against Kouyou's temple:
- It's already here. It's a unique copy. It might be distorted by the unfaithful memory but as long as you think about it, it won't go away in the depths of your mind.
Kouyou slowly settled on Yuu to ravish him with kisses. A furious passion that left the other breathless.
They made love, again. It was the third time already and even if they were both drawing into their last bits of energy, it was still intense, both physically and emotionally.
When Yuu later looked at Kouyou's calm face, facing him with his fingers playing on his full lips that he knew it.
I'm falling in love with you.
And I don't even know your face.
Pain, pain, pain, pain...Of leaving you here. Behind. I can't stay. I just can't. And we can find each other here from now. Just here, you, me, nobody else.
Us.
Kouyou found a ticket from the Black Moral about the cocktails he had drunk that night. He turned it over and wrote few words.
"Our shelter made of the stars and the moon."
He stayed long seconds watching him, sleeping, breathing, living. He put the paper beside Yuu and he closed the door behind himself, dark clouds instantly catching him up and making him realize it: he couldn't feel alright for too long.
Haunting.
Destroying.
The phone rang loudly. Kouyou shifted in his bed as the sun was bathing in his bedroom. A sleepless night spent in Yuu's arms had given him a lethargic feel: calling in sick at the coffee shop, the same eternal questions while watching the ceiling "when?"...
Now.
- Takashima here.
- You gave up on me like he did.
Husky voice caused by excessive smoking.
Dial tone and Kouyou gripped the front of his shirt, his breath erratic and his eyes burning.
Waterfall.
All of his memories were back once again, torturing, ripping his clothes off and opening the wounds once more.
He closed his wet eyes and made his best not to focus on the sudden anxiety this call had provided.
Kouyou left his bed in a hurry, grabbed the mails he had gotten abandoned earlier on the table of his kitchen and looked for a certain handwriting. He opened it with difficulty, preventing his hands to shake too much and sat on one of his high chair, defeated.
"Kou-chan,
I hope you're doing well in Tokyo. I'm absolutely sure you do. You might be surprise to receive a letter from me because usually we speak over the phone but I know you wouldn't listen to me...
It's about your mother.
She's sick. She's been talking a lot about you recently and she tells me how much she regrets the past...
I know you're still hurt and you might not forgive her but she'd like to see you.
Could you please, come back for a day or two? You can stay at my place, the children will be happy to see you.
I hope I can hear good news from you soon.
Your uncle, Atsushi."
He couldn't see anymore with the curtain of water falling from his eyes. He only leaned against the table, his hand crumpling the letter, letting it out because it was overflowing.
"Our shelter made of the stars and the moon."
Yuu didn't like the bitter taste of this morning.
It brought him in the past, a similar lonely morning when few words on a paper had slowly killed his hopes. But this time, it was growing. Like a virus. Gaining strength.
He'll come back here. Our shelter. Yes.
His thumb stroked the words and Yuu recitated them like a mantra.
