Oh, what a hearbreaking blow. There's so much subtle pain in this that just really hurts. (Does that make sense? It's not a bloated, overdone death!fic. It's quiet and sad and that, I think, makes it hurt all the more.) The end is simply devastating.

Yes, the "subtle pain" makes sense. I don't like it when something is overdone (in writing especially) - less is more, huh?
