When I heard the news, I went and got myself a Brigadier icon (sad to say, I hadn't had one yet), then went onto amazon.com and ordered "Battlefield," which had been on my "buy this someday" list, then put on "The Three Doctors" and watched it.
I'm definitely in the mood for some good Brig!death fics.
Thanks for the link to the article. I love Tom Baker's tribute: "Of all the characters in Doctor Who there is no doubt that he was the most loved by the fans." So true.
Yeah, the reason I didn't already have a Brig icon is only because I never happened to see one that I really liked. Then last night I just *had* to have an icon, so I went hunting through dwicons for one.
Thanks for the fic recs. I like to read angsty stuff when I'm feeling sad, so I think they will help.
*hugs* Looking at my flist, we are all pretty much as upset as each other, and why would we not be?
And you have a collection of Brigadier death!fics?!! I carefully avoided any such thing in my recs, wanting to be positive.
Mind, Clocket's is great, but I hate to read it, because I never want to think of the Brigadier actually dying. I'm with the Doctor - would rather not know.
*shrugs* I'm not so good at grieving. Fic helps. (Oddly, my collection was intended for reading when other Who-ish people died... I honestly never thought I'd be reading them for him. *sad*)
Fair enough. I am the sort of person who doesn't like the book of the Man in the Iron mask because all the musketeers get killed off at the end. Literary characters aren't immortal (unless, they are, I supose), but I they can be, unless I have to read a death scene. Clocket's was gorgeous, though, very much so.
*hugs again*
(If you are looking for Brig icons, this one is snaggable - it was made by bibliophile1887; also sallymn who makes lovely icons has made a small batch today.)

For lack of words. I didn't expect that ever to happen either. (Both his death and me being speechless, but mostly his death.) Boo.

I have not got a Brig icon yet - I never found the right one - but Clocket has promised to make me one.

Somehow, I had him filed under "Old soldiers never die" . . . I loved his "I have decided to fade away" line.
I can't believe it.
ETA: Tom Baker has posted a particularly sweet tribute:
