Yeah, definitely a lot of shoplifters. The lady in story #4 being so blase about being caught tells me she is either a) a sociopath, b) on drugs, or c) both.
Yeah, the shoplifters noticed we were between security guards, which was a total suck on upper managements part, and as a result we had a surge of shoplifting activity. Happily we now have a new security guard, so it should fall back to a less crazy level.
Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if #4 was both sociopathic and on drugs. We get some very strange regulars.
We had loads of shoplifters when I worked in the discount store. We still get them in the place I work at now (not my concession, but the store we're in) but not as many as there.
And I feel you on #5. Our signs are really clear. They have to be, because we put non-sale with the sale stuff (we have to do this, as there's just not enough space in the shop to have everything sectioned off). A lot of customers think the Dublin curtains are on sale when it's the Brooklyn curtains next to them. The sign is in front of the Brooklyn curtains, and has the name of said curtains on the sign in large letters. But apparently this is misleading...
I don't know how it is on your side of the pond but here, I'd love LOVE to see you break/spill/open you bought it signs. And god I can just imagine the paint mess. As someone who used to go in and 'fix' makeup. I had no qualms of throwing opened into our DNS basket. I would fill that thing and every time I'd have a customer happily trot over 'ARE THESE ON CLEARANCE?' and busting into the nope, they were SEALED for a reason. Someone opened them to test a color and welp, we can't sell them now because they are now contaminated. Ringworm, scabies, shingles, MRSA, who knows what else might be on that makeup. So I can't sell it, it's a health issue because someone had to open it.

Or the shorter, more tuneful version: "Que sera, sera."
