I had this exact thing happen to me when I worked at the gas station. Some people just have no concept of consideration or patience.

When I worked a register many years ago I never begrudged customers merely for paying in coins. Like you noted, cashiers pretty much always need small change! The hate-worthy customers are those who slam down an enormous pile of change that takes a long time to tally up while other customers wait impatiently.

Then there's the little-old-lady type who slowly fishes out coins one at a time from her rat's nest of a purse. I could never bring myself to hate the little old ladies, even when they hold up the line. They were always more amusing-- in an eye rolling way-- than anything else.

I had a customer once tally up a $40 purchase during X-mas rush and paid in half dollars for the whole amount. Like at least the dollar coins I can give away and kids are all excited over them but nobody wants no half dollars. My bag at the end of the day weighed at least 4 pounds because of those damn half dollars.

Aw I love half dollars. Mind you, $40 worth is a lot, but I would taken a few off of you.

It was so frustrating because every time I tried to use them to lighten my load, I'd get a huffy 'I WANT QUARTERS' from customers. I even tried to pawn them off on the kids that were paying for themselves and their parents would tell them to request quarters because half dollars weren't real currency which frustrated me even more because if it wasn't real currency, I wouldn't have it in my drawer in the first place.

The few times I've paid with change I always count it because I'm broke at that point and need to know how much I'm getting for my own peace of mind. I also feel horrible handing a wad of coins over in the first place. It's so frigging rude to just toss money at people like that, argh.

My coworker and I were talking about this...and the people who hand over a hundred dollar bill for a two dollar purchase

Especially at the beginning of the day, or the beginning of my shift. I literally just opened my register, I do not have change for $100! Then the customer who wanted me to break the bill gets pissy because I'm "taking too long." I'm sorry, the reason it's "taking so long" is that I personally didn't have the change to give you, I had to get one of my managers to break it for you. Get over yourself and STFU.
