Why go to a sushi bar if your girlfriend can't eat rice? This is unfair on everyone, his girlfriend, the staff and the customers. I'm glad he left in the end. I'm curious, what did your friend say to him to make him leave? If it was me I'd have probably said "Do everyone a favour and FUCK OFF."
Right? I was wondering that myself. I'm allergic to certain kinds of rice (luckily I can eat sushi) so when I go to places, I ask if there is any substitute I can get for the rice, even if there is an extra charge. If there isn't, well then I just get something else. I don't raise hell
( ... )
Can you please tell your friend that his reaction to that guy was just awesome. I LOVE seeing rude people getting pwned! (apologies for using that last word, I've always used it lol)
Oh man, I live in Japan too and there's very little that's worse than being stuck by/near the foreigners being obnoxious assholes. I have a tendency to also jump in with translations because I hate seeing people struggling to understand/be understood, and it usually works out, but every once in a while I end up regretting ever leaving my house that day.
And wtf!? You want half off for inconveniencing the chef and not having the basically free part of the food!?
My mom came to visit me last year; she's sensitive to shrimp, but I wanted her to try kushikatsu. We went to my neighbourhood place where you don't actually order, they just give you whatever they cook until you ask them to stop feeding you. With the magic of being polite and reasonable, we not only got no shrimp for her, but they replaced the shrimp pieces with various vegetable ones. Maybe I should have asked for (sorry, demanded) half off her bill since she didn't eat the expensive shrimp!
You should have! Yeah, I'm the same way. I can't eat certain types of rice, so when we plan a night out, we call ahead to talk and discuss options with them and usually, they are quite nice about it, but I never expect some price change for less, or fully understand if they replace it with something that costs a bit more. When we just walk in to some place and I order something that comes with rice I can't eat, I simply just tell them to hold the rice. I don't expect the world to cave for me. Now, I tend to go to a lot of the same shops though, that know off the bat when I get there.
I will never jump in and help another foreigner, honestly. Because it back-fires on me each time. If it weren't for the poor boy and how confused he looked, I wouldn't have.
He's probably a scammer. If he frequents Japan, he would know that Japan really doesn't do Sushi with brown rice for soooooo many reasons, and it would be hard to forget a restaurant that actually does. But as I don't know him personally, I donno if he's done that before. Meh.
I've been to exactly one sushi restaurant that does sushi with brown rice. And they advertise it heavily. So I get the impression it isn't done often. If this guy goes to sushi places all the time he would probably know this.
Sorry you had to get in the middle of him being a jerk.
Oh yeah? That's cool. I know they exist. Just not entirely sure as to where, as I don't particularly seek it out myself. The only one I ever went to was in Osaka, when I lived out there. In my area, I haven't seen any.
