She waits too long.

He gets suspicious, she can tell, when she falters, hesitates for too long. She can see it in his eyes; the tattoo of suspicion burning into her own.

She avoids his eyes. Shakes it off. Thinks to herself, what would she do? She doesn’t know, in the end, and tucks a lock of hair behind her ear, softly biting her lip a little before stuttering out a "I…I need to go". Leaves the room with his stare on her back, almost letting a fleeting stab of guilt flare toward him.

When she’s gone, he lets his gaze drop to the floor.

Maybe he is a fool for thinking something changed between them.

He finally kisses her, one night, when he takes her home from the lab.

She’s slightly surprised, but really, she knew it would happen eventually. It doesn’t mean she’s prepared, though.

He tastes of hope and a little of whiskey, so she smiles into his lips and lets her back collide with the door. She thinks of letting it go further, but pushes him away and closes the door on him with a flirty smile.

When she’s inside, she lets the smile slide off her face, and breathes a sigh.

He figures it out, in the end. He doesn’t acknowledge Walter, or Astrid, before storming up to her in the lab, punching her square in the face.

They both ignore Astrid’s shocked gasp; Walter doesn’t say anything.

“You thought you could pretend to be her? You thought we’d believe you?”

It’s not his words, but the cold hate in his blue irises that make her shiver.

She manages to give an icy smirk back, tasting blood and wiping the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand.

“I played you, didn’t I?”
